Re: Loud clunk when accelerating in 1st gear.

Maybe first gear is only partially engaging and then banging fully home when fully under load. Check that the shifter lever travel (and linkage if applicable) is not being partially restricted on it's way down to first gear. If that's OK, drain your transmission oil when hot and check it for chunks...

Re: Loud clunk when accelerating in 1st gear.

Thank you so much for clarification Rob and Steve! I am so thankful for you pointing me to a plausible solution. I doubt it can be the stand or steering head bearing. It is way too loud for that. It’s only one bang and only in first gear.

Re: Loud clunk when accelerating in 1st gear.

Thank you so much for advice Rob! I am very much hoping you are right about it been driveshaft related. Quite scared to open up the gearbox. It’s not in my comfort zone. it's worth checking the head bearings. Loose bearings can make a clunk under acceleration. Rob What do you mean with head bearing?...

Loud clunk when accelerating in 1st gear.

My 1989 r100st is making a loud clunk when accelerating in 1st. If I pull away slowly it will not do this. The sound is pretty violent. Like banging a hammer on an anvil. What can it be? Only in first gear. Do I need a new gearbox?

Good question. Simple answer, it doesn’t. Tilt the bike or tilt the tank. It’s a design flaw.

Re: Dangerous brake line

I'd just replace that part. There's likely some unseen fatigue somewhere. The day before I found this, I was riding thru one of my favourite go fast roads. Luckily it was in heavy fog, so it was a go slow road that day. The next morning, I overshot a stop sign because the brakes failed...literally ...

Re: Dangerous brake line

Not supposed to be there, but I guess you figured out that.. Yeah, I know! Quite shocked to find such a timebomb on my bike! I’m making new ones tomorrow and making sure to secure it properly. I guess you need to do a careful inspection of the entire machine. Indeed! Bit by bit for safety and relia...

Dangerous brake line

I was puzzeled that I couldn’t pull my bike backwards. I overhauled the calipers an was about to start changing the wheelbearings when I saw the real reason. The brake line was dragging on the front wheel! When going backwards the brake line would get more tension and would tighten up its grip on th...

Re: Pipe under fueltank drains my tank.

On my /7, that outlet connects to an internal pipe which opens up in the well around the tank filler neck. It's there to drain the water from around the filler when it rains. Do all these tanks have something like that? Could this tank's internal pipe have a crack in it? Kurt in S.A. You were preci...

Re: Pipe under fueltank drains my tank.

There was a very small number of non metal tanks on monolevers in the late '80's. I've only ever seen one. I can't remember if it was a single petcock or not, but looking at those castings/moulds I'm wondering if it's one of those? Mrducati, what is it made of? It is a steel tank. On my /7, that ou...
