Damn I'm dumb sometimes. Turns out, as predicted above, it was a "not tight enough" positive battery connection. And I re-built my spare starter before I messed with the bike, so now I have a spare "just in case".

Re: Starter makes big click, but nothing after that??
I have to pull things apart, but pretty sure I'm getting current to the solenoid (big click), so the starter relay is working. I'll know more this evening.

Starter makes big click, but nothing after that??
Hi again. Battery seems OK (12.7 volts) and the voltage DOESN'T drop when I hit the starter button- My guess is that the solenoid isn't pulling back far enough to make the connection? Suggestions? I pulled, cleaned, and put this starter back a few weeks ago. Worked fine until yesterday. I have anoth...

Re: So, any EE's out there that will explain how a tach work
Tach is still working fine after 100+ miles. It was the sketchy + connection, not the ground.
As to which bike, Using a R100GS tach on a R100GS.

Re: Fuel line- wadda ya use?
Use this stuff. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/bingfuel.php You ever wonder why you have black gunk in your carb when you remove the main jet? It's your old fashioned rubber fuel line dissolving. Polyurethane lines last forever and won't get stiff, crack, or dissolve. These are even ...

Re: So, any EE's out there that will explain how a tach work
Update- always want this info in here in case someone searches later. For tach issues on a 1992 R100GS- CHECK THE FUSE, DUMMY!!!! The tach and brake lights share a fuse- if your brake light isn't working due to blown fuse (maybe because you just pulled a lot of the wiring off during a rebuild???), t...

OK, back to grounds then. I'm trying to remember where they all are. Main one at the speedo bolt, seems like a few more on the top tube, what am I missing (besides my youth, energy, and marbles)?

Re: So, any EE's out there that will explain how a tach work
OK, here's more info. I test ran 2 of the tachs again yesterday. For the first 15 minutes, they worked fine, though one seemed to read pretty high. Then, they started getting erratic again. This would lead me to believe this is HEAT related, not EMI or other electronic interference- that should ALWA...

Re: So, any EE's out there that will explain how a tach work
OK, great ideas. Last week, I ran a separate lead from the coil connection to the tach to see if that changed anything, and it didn't seem to help.
Now, about EMI- anything I can do to filter or suppress it? What might cause it?
Thanks,
Don
