So, any EE's out there that will explain how a tach works?

I sort of get it. Some hocus-pocus wizardry circuit count the pulses of "on/off" from the coil, and translate that to a voltage that drives the meter needle to the correct position. I've tested 3-4 tachs on my bike this week. One works fine and steady (it's from a '03 R1150RT). Several of ...

Re: 1984 R65 :Tell me more

OK, not quite on the subject, but... The first "parts" R65 I bought was a LS. Got it for $500, not running, been in a garage for 5 yrs. Swapped the bean can, and it ran great. It had all papers since new, including those form the NY dealer that installed Del Orto carbs (I kid you not), rea...

Re: 1984 R65 :Tell me more

Here's some good news: The tranny: unless wrecked, is a jewel- has the circlip, never had to work that hard on a 650cc bike, same one on all airheads that year. All the electrical: same bean can, black box, alternator, etc. as other '84's. Clutch: same as all airheads, probably in great shape. Frame...

Re: 1984 R65 :Tell me more

Absolutely join R65.org. I've owned and pulled apart about 6 R65's. They share some parts with R80ST's which are unique, but nearly all post '81 parts are the same as other airheads- My experience is the tranny, carbs, lights, all electrics, ignition, etc. are the same. The engines have some differe...

Re: Bad noises from my Tranny- Follow up and end of story

Hi all, In case anyone ever searches for a thread regarding ghastly tranny noises and finds this, I want to give the follow up info and (I hope) conclusion. I have now ridden the bike 80 miles. Rode it hard, shifted it hard, ran it to redline and banged out power shifts- had to find out if it was go...

Re: Lost my Idle

Make sure the "choke" cables are allowing it to return all the way. If the prob is before the 1 to 2 junction box, it's one place that could hurt both jugs.

Bad gas? or as ME 109 said, maybe water in floats (that's a 10 second fix).

Let us know.

Re: Bad noises from my Tranny

They were ghastly- good word! But not really there in 2nd gear. Just kept getting louder as I went up in gears. I'm now convinced this is "normal" and I know from the spare trannys in my garage, that the higher the gear, the more "free play" between the input and output. 5th gear...

Fuel line- wadda ya use?

In putting things together on the GS, I now have leaking fuel connections at the tee's coming from cross engine fuel line. I really like the BMW braid covered line because it is easy to bend and get on and off. But, it seems to only last about a year. I have some auto 1/4 inch fuel line that fits, b...

Re: Bad noises from my Tranny

I'm inclined to think vibrating or gears shaking against each other might be the cause as well. Although one would think that in at least one of the 5 gears selected when on the stand would have quieted the noise. No noise in 1st, increasing noise the higher the gear You might drain the oil in your...
