Re: Tight brake camshaft

No, nothing intruding in the tunnel. I checked that first. Just after I posted, I thought of slackening the cover bolts to see if there is any play in the cover itself and then re-tightening them with the camshaft in place to see what happens. The gasket itself is cheap but it takes a few days to ge...

Tight brake camshaft

Guys - - I just replaced a leaking crown gear gasket on my '81 R100. When I re-installed the plate on the final drive, I tightened the eight bolts that hold it in a criss-cross pattern and torqued them to spec in three lifts. Everything was looking good to that point. I lubed the brake camshaft but ...

Re: Replacement tires for R90s

I needed to replace the tires on my '82 R100 last year and investigated many alternatives. Not that I really needed to get into it as deeply as I did - - I just find it interesting. I was about to pull the trigger on a set of Conti Attack Classics but then came across several reports of cupping. Eno...

Re: Looking at a '04 R1150RT

Looks like a good bike at a good price. Handsome color. Fantastic all-weather bike, IMO. Always thought the 1150RT was a better looking bike than the 1200RT. I had an '03 for a few years. Rode it from Portland to San Francisco to Denver to Atlanta in '07. Stopped by Galt to see Duane after I left Sa...

Re: 71 R50/5 stuck oil pan

When you get the pan off and get it all sorted out, I would replace all of those old bolts with new ones. When you re-install the pan, be very careful when tightening the bolts as the bolt holes in the bottom of the engine are very, very easy to strip out. Don't use a torque wrench or a micro-torque...

Re: Hexhead front wheel install

The Owner's Manual - - which is actually pretty good - - makes no mention of grease at all. Haynes only talks about a "smear of grease". I suppose a smear of good quality waterproof grease wouldn't hurt. I never worried about it before. On airheads, I've always just used a little bearing g...

Hexhead front wheel install

What is the proper type of grease to use on the axle of a hexhead GS? Should it be waterproof?

Re: Tire mfg. date

I don't think there is any such thing as stored correctly. There is. Sunlight is an issue, but not nearly as bad as ozone. In the old days, old tires sitting inside a garage with a big compressor were in a TERRIBLE place to store. Tires stored without sunshine, ozone, and in reasonable temps can la...

Re: Tire mfg. date

I'd run them. Most of my bikes have tires that are more than two years old... Mine too but most of them didn't start out that way. Sort of annoying but no harm, no foul I guess. They do look as if they've been stored correctly. These Metzelers, BTW, were made in China. Shouldn't surprise me but it ...

Tire mfg. date

A new set of Metzler Tourances for my 1200GS arrived yesterday. They look like they were manufactured last week but the DOT date codes say 2614 on the front and 1514 on the rear. Should I be concerned or should I just mount them and forget about it?
