UPDATE: Stumble, hard start, and backfire...

Installed new condenser on Saturday morning and all is running well. Looked for shorts against the case and rubber/insulation all appeared in good order. I ran Duane's points diagnostic and all seemed good - bigger sparks at extremes, even mannered in the sweet spot. Old condenser was not original, ...

Re: Stumble, hard start, and backfire...

Jean...ran like a top last weds, put it up at night, and very difficult time starting the next morning. It was on the side stand over night so starting produced a rather typical puff of smoke. I was able to get it running, and seemed to resolve after some initial rough running and a seemingly normal...

Re: Stumble, hard start, and backfire...

Thanks for the metaphor, Duane. I intend to use your diagnostic algorithm, but, as airhead parts aren't available at the corner store and I don't share your encyclopedic knowledge of airheads, I ordered what MIGHT be needed. That way, the repair won't take three months while I wait for parts with a ...

Re: Stumble, hard start, and backfire...

Many thanks for the replies. Re the carbs and hoses...should be in order. I think the hoses are only a couple years old at most. But worth looking into...

Stumble, hard start, and backfire...

All, Last fall I posted about a small stumble with my 1971 r60/5 that eventually corrected itself. BIke has stock electrics. Now, it appears to be back and I'm looking to replace the capacitor per Jean's advice and maybe the points. Everything else SHOULD be okay (tune, carbs, etc. should be good) a...

Re: /5 mirror options

I'm one of the ones for which the headlight mounted Alberts just don't work. But I do like the way they look. I have euro bars and had them on for a year or so and finally accepted the fact that they don't work for me. In addition to the complete lack of rear view, I was not happy with the extra tim...

Re: Toaster tank

Seems to me that attaching toaster panels to a tank not designed to hold them would present a hazard, especially with only magnets. I sure wouldn't want to be behind you when one comes off. I could be wrong, but on /5 tanks, I believe the roundel area is convex and on /6 tanks (and newer), it is con...

Re: Slash 5 key and battery drain

Thanks to all for the advice, tips, knowledge. I'm going to start with removing the battery cables, a thorough cleaning and reinstallation with a healthy dab of dielectric grease, and see where that gets me. My guess is that my cables are the stock ones installed in 1971 at the factory so it may be ...

Re: Slash 5 key and battery drain

There's a lot of crap, misinformation, and poorly written guidance on the Internet. I came here, as I have in the past, and as I believe many (but not all) do, for some guidance on an issue I have no experience with, to learn from my board mates, and to avoid damaging my bike (as I have learned from...
