Re: Fork Rebuild Stiction Help
I can only speak from personal experience of using a 5W something similar to original BMW spec oil i.e. very thin. When pumping a single leg relatively slowly by hand, the compression damping was all but imperceptible while rebound damping was much more noticeable particularly over the last inch of ...

Re: Fork Rebuild Stiction Help
If you are conducting the "with oil test" without the springs being in then there should be very little resistance when stroking the forks by hand. On the compression stroke the damping will hardly be perceptible. Rebound damping should be stronger and much more easily felt. If the springs...

Re: Spark plug caps
I had NGK resistor caps go open circuit when measured with an ohm meter. They still passed a spark but I suspected it was a little weak. I dismantled them and found corrosion on the internal contact with the resistor which when cleaned up resolved the problem. To get them apart grab the bit that scr...

Re: Voltage regulator questions
To get 13.3 Volts means the charging system is doing something. Only just Just off idle you wouldn't expect to see more than 13.3 volts so when you say off idle what revs are we talking about and does the voltage increase at higher revs to 14.0 Volts or something near ? That’s the problem, the volt...

Re: Float adjustment
You cannot look at float level alone you have to look at the entire carburettor as a whole, if you look at it there will be an upper and lower limit for the float height and in no way can you set the float level via how high the level is in the float bowl. As far as I know there is no specification...

Re: Float adjustment
... the exact level isn't as critical as many people would like to think. +1. Just had to chime in here. The fuel(float) level has to be within the range between too high (overflowing when parked) and too low (starving for fuel at full throttle in top gear). Picture what's actually happening in the...

Re: Float adjustment
My bike runs rich thought the range. I weighed the floats and they both seem to be around 12.5 (ISH) gms on cheapy electronic kitchen scales. I put a clear float bowl on with the carbs fitted and the levels are a couple of mm below the gasket face on the forward (lower) edge of the float bowl. Does...

Re: Float adjustment
I suppose if the float needle is visibly worn then it will affect the fuel level slightly even if it doesn't leak. The fact that they are spring loaded will reduce the amount of pressure that the floats can exert on the needle and tend to keep it seated so perhaps that limits wear. Mine still look g...

Re: Bing float weight
Screenshot 2024-03-24 at 11-01-30 Bing Carburetor floats on BMW Airhead Motorcycles.png Snowbum says new floats on all Bings are 10gm. He also says 13.5gm is likely "maximum allowable". Ongoing adjustment might extend their usefulness, they'll need replacing eventually. https://bmwmotorcy...
