Re: '87 R80RT - jumpy in first gear

Thanks! I have asked the shop for an estimate to clean up the tranny. Have found a few on eBay for around $500.

Re: '87 R80RT - jumpy in first gear

Took the old gal to a bike shop in OKC that works on airheads. Was told an input gear blew apart and spewed forth metal shavings throughout the tranny. I am now looking for a good used tranny. Else the bike goes to the junk yard.

Re: '87 R80RT - jumpy in first gear

I was able to get the tranny side clutch parts put back on. Have free play at the handlebar clutch handle. No change in the noise - when the clutch is engaged, noise like a Ducati around 3,000 - 3,500 rpm. No rattling when clutch handle is pulled in. No noise when clutch is engaged and engine speed ...

Re: '87 R80RT - jumpy in first gear

Got no such magical device. Used an allen wrench to pry it out. It looked fine - no flat spots or signs of wear. The races refused to come out. I put the new bearing in just for G.P. and will put the pivot arm, etc. back in place tomorrow after work. Then I will start her up and find out if she make...

Re: '87 R80RT - jumpy in first gear

I was able to remove the pivot arm - pushed it away from me and it dropped free. Have removed the cover that covers the thrust bearing but cannot figure out the bearing! It's in the housing where it belongs and I can feel it but no way to get a grip on it to pul it out.

Suggestions?

Re: '87 R80RT - jumpy in first gear

It's been busy for me of late. Had some time this evening to get started replacing the thrust/throw-out bearing. Clymer's manual. Have the cable disconnected, the pivot bolt out, the boot loosened up. How on earth does one remove the clutch lever? The bolt on back side of it has very little clearanc...

Re: '87 R80RT - jumpy in first gear

One thing I am sure about - no miss with the engine. She runs smooth without hiccups. Improved grounding and new coils & spark plug wires a few years ago helped out a bunch. The noise and jumpiness happens around 3,500 rpm. The only time she got above 4,000 was on the ride home Wed and no misbeh...

Re: '87 R80RT - jumpy in first gear

Airbear - When this first came to my attention, I had just left the office, heading to the store at lunchtime. Took a left turn in first gear and it felt like the centerstand had not been fully retracted. I pulled over and checked things out - nothing showing. Got back on and when in 1st gear only t...
