Re: Troubleshoot help. No Spark R90/6

Thanks! Carbs are easy enough to take apart and put back together. That is next on the list. Today he rode to the cafe, rode to work, then tried to go out for lunch and the bike would not fire up. Then at the end of his work day, it ran poorly, roughly, then OK for a few min, then poorly again...whi...

Re: Troubleshoot help. No Spark R90/6

The beancan bike is a different bike that i was referring to. That box is installed between the two horizontal tubes on the frame behind the steering neck. The bike has no fairings and an aftermarket headlight so that box should get enough air in that location... or perhaps the steering neck tube is...

Re: Troubleshoot help. No Spark R90/6

I am referring to that box in your photo as the 'booster'.
Perhaps I am incorrect in my terminology.

FWIW - I have a bean can ignition with points and use that box and I have not had to touch my points/timing in 5 years (4k miles). It is an occasional sunday rider kind of bike.

Re: Troubleshoot help. No Spark R90/6

Humm... the bike owner contacted me and is having issues again. SO it seems that I found many small gremlins but there may be something larger still looming about. He is referring to a backfire/rough running issue. So, the backfire could mean timing, or rough running could mean carbs.

Re: Can a /6 starter relay replace the dreaded /5 Relay?

Yes, I have read several articles on using a typical modern relay but this bike is not for me, and I'd like to retain the starter lockout if possible. Which, in my readings, seems that the only way is to modify the /5 starter relay.

Can a /6 starter relay replace the dreaded /5 Relay?

It is a 72 R75/5. The typical 'chirping' or 'clicking' issue. I have read about the various options of modifying the /5 relay, or replacing it with a modern relay but you will void the starter prevention while the bike is running. I can't get any clear information on swapping it was a /6 relay thoug...

Re: Troubleshoot help. No Spark R90/6

These were the large paper style filter. I never use them either. I know the Petcocks do not have the screens on them so I put the small style fuel filter instead.

Re: Troubleshoot help. No Spark R90/6

I figured it out. Yes, it was a bad ground that had me getting an iffy spark, but then I still had similar symptoms.
It turned out to be bad fuel filters. I saw them filling with gas but no gas was getting to the carbs. Douph. $10 fix and it runs great now.

Sounds like coil to me.
That is why I switched out the coils and went back to stock.
The fact that you say that makes me think it is one of the two items I did not replace, the booster and the electronic ignition.
If it is not fuel related, I have a feeling it is one of them...

Re: Troubleshoot help. No Spark R90/6

OK, got it going. A ground was disconnected going to the coil. I ran the bike for about 20 min, it ran great. Then fired it up about 45 minutes later and 1.5 mile away, it started to seem as if it was choking out. It feels fuel related. I'd let the bike sit for a few minutes, fire it up, it would ge...
