It could be a conversion with the express purpose of pulling a sidecar. /2 frame with sidecar attaching points from the factory. Is it possible that your right foot position and size may be creating an aerodynamic situation of low pressure in the area of the float bowl overflow? I seem to remember a thread a while back about right foot stinkyness.

The mild gassey smell may not be from the gas cap seal leak. it could be from a weepy fuel line.

Make sure that the squish area of the pistons you have are compatible with the squish area of the heads you have.

I would suggest dropping the oil pan to clean out sediment before running the engine up to operating temperature.

Cranking and running the engine for 5-10 minutes doesn't evaporate moisture from the oil, so it has been accumulating for 25 years making goop in the pan.

ZM, the assembly line safety man probably caught him bumping the crankcase with his hand and made him switch to a tap from the mallet. I did notice that the tap was very precise in force and direction. lol

Nobody has mentioned the high pressure relief valve in the back of the filter cavity. If this valve is in good working order, filters should never collapse.

Sure, replacing one spoke at a time is a way to do it. You would want to do a final check on alignment once you finished replacing the spokes.
