Duane always advised care with torquing those bolts. Maybe just add some sealer, torqued to spec which would end up being a tad higher anyhow. Judicious...

I'd check the earth wire to the regulator. Easy to do.
Dunno your history with airheads, but in case you are unaware, always disconnect the neg at the battery beffore you remove the front cover. You risk shorting the diode board...

Are you using LED lights? I found the fogging was much worse.
Maybe a small bag of silica inside for a trial?
But to answer the question, maybe the way to go is to prevent the moisture getting in? Is the rubber gasket too compressed after 40 years?

I've used a thunderchild diode board for decades. A worthy alternative, but the oem are also good.

I love those big Yamaha FJ bikes. Nice to look at and no doubt a speeding ticket collector. I had one n the late '80's. FJ1200. Monster bike and it chewed thru rear tyres real fast. The only real option then was a Dunlop radial @ $250. They lasted about 5K km and in my first year on that bike I did...
