Too lean would explain both the overheating and revving up without throttle opening. You could also have a sticky advance mechanism.

If you do decide to re-torque the heads, start by loosening each nut a half turn or so then tightening to whatever spec you follow.

If the points are opening, bypass the booster and see if you get spark.
