ME 109 , if you can't get the hole threaded all the way to the bottom, just grind the last few threads off of what you will be threading into the hole.

It could be a conversion with the express purpose of pulling a sidecar. /2 frame with sidecar attaching points from the factory. Is it possible that your right foot position and size may be creating an aerodynamic situation of low pressure in the area of the float bowl overflow? I seem to remember a thread a while back about right foot stinkyness.

The mild gassey smell may not be from the gas cap seal leak. it could be from a weepy fuel line.

Make sure that the squish area of the pistons you have are compatible with the squish area of the heads you have.

I would suggest dropping the oil pan to clean out sediment before running the engine up to operating temperature.
Cranking and running the engine for 5-10 minutes doesn't evaporate moisture from the oil, so it has been accumulating for 25 years making goop in the pan.
