Re: Charging Question

sorry for reading your post too quick. I see now that you pulled the rear brush off the slip ring.

Does the light stay illuminated when the engine is running?

Re: Charging Question

Hey gents, I have a 71 R75/5. It is not charging when I rev up the rpms. The battery is fully charged and holds the charge (it is an Odyssey maintenance free). Here is my testing results so far: Rotor Across slip rings 3.4ohms slip ring short to ground good Lift bottom/back brush off slip rings, id...

Re: valve spring too tight

Be absolutely certain you are rotating the engine clockwise when viewed from the front. Don't ask how I know this. :(

Re: Clutch cable premature failures

After about 30 years the original cable on my R90s finally snapped. I installed a new one I had kept as a spare and it broke at the handle within 1,000 miles. As Duane suggests, I installed the new cable and pulled the lever in very slowly, noticing that the attachment point at the lever was not rot...

Re: 71 R50/5 Well this just sucks! Charging

"The mechanical regulators usually fail by slowly deteriorating the output voltage. A failure to charge, in which the regulator is suspected, can be PROVEN, on BOTH the mechanical and electronics regulators, by bypassing the regulator. This is done with a jumper wire with male spades at each en...

Re: 71 R50/5 Well this just sucks! Charging

I would agree with your assessment. If the light goes out, generally its charging. My next test, FWIW, would be to bypass the voltage regulator (you know how to short out the two blue wires at the voltage regulator, right?) then start and see what the voltage is at various rpm's. If significantly hi...

Re: 71 R50/5 ignition timing ?

FWIW, going from a .016" points gap to .015" will retard timing slightly. This is useful if your plate is rotated completely clockwise (fully retarded) and you're still having issues getting the marks at idle to appear. I agree with Kurt about the full advance setting being more important ...

Re: Gen Light

Kurt,

Can you elaborate please? I assume you are referring to the insulating washers for the brush holders?

If so, I made sure that there was no continuity between the brushes and the alternator (stator holder case).

thanks,

Re: Gen Light

hi Bamboo,

The rotor was measured before installation. Slip ring to slip ring showed a resistance of about 3 ohms if I recall.

No, when everything is connected, (brushes contacting front and rear slip rings), the GEN light does not come on.

Bulb is good (ohmed out)

thanks,
