Re: Mystery fuel tank
There was an R65 mono but AFAIK it had the same tank as the R80 including two taps and as you say the earlier R65 tanks were quite different. BTW the valve covers are mounted on the wrong side in that picture, not that it's any sort of problem other than what it might say about the previous owner. Y...

Re: Float adjustment
I find that removing the float bowls to measure can result in 'some' petrol coming out of the fuel line when the float drops. Better to use a clear plastic bowl. Agreed, back in 2017 at the start of this thread I was saying that measuring the level in a removed bowl was flawed, not just because of ...

Re: ‘93 R100 GSPD. Weepy Fork Seal
Conventional Fork seals have a garter spring which puts pressure on the seal to keep it in contact with the stanchion. The garter spring is not a continuous loop as there is a joint where one tapered end is screwed into the other. In the dim and distance past I have unscrewed the joint, chopped a li...

Re: Loss of compression
I can't remember whether it was here or else where but we talked of valve seat recession being temperature dependent which means higher ambient temperatures and sustained high speed running and exhaust valve more than inlet valve will be when it tends to occur the most. Not to put a damper on your g...

Re: Need clarification about Generator Light necessity
Yes the bulb is needed. With ignition on a small current flows from the battery through the gen light and then via the brushes and slip rings through the rotor winding to earth in order to energise the rotor winding so that it will produce a magnetic field. Once the alternator is producing output th...

Re: Oil filter filling
I really don't think this is a big deal one way or the other. On a vehicle with a vertical spin on filter I can see the sense in filling it with oil but with our cartridge filter it would be a messy to pre-soak it and I can't see it achieving much. If you can't pre-fill then obviously there is going...

Re: Oil filter filling
I've never thought of doing that, the only thing I do before starting the engine is crank with the plugs removed and lying on the heads until the oil pressure light goes out. I can see no harm in pre-soaking the filter but with fresh clean oil where are the particles coming from to challenge the dry...

Re: 1980 r100rt electrical gremlins..
Robs comments about megger insulation testers reminded me of a little story. Back in 1971 I was a first year Instrument apprentice with ICI. At Christmas time it was the tradition for the whole gang of apprentices which included all the trades, to tour the various trade workshops singing carols in t...

Re: instrument fog
Fogging is quite common from what I can gather. I've tried silica gel and it did work but not for very long. Over time the fogging seems to attract dirt. When I had my speedo apart to fix the ubiquitous slipping gear wheel I cleaned the glass and what a difference that made. The tach now looks posit...

Re: Pre load Gear changing
The rose joint linkage should obviously be superior but I've found the "bent wire" linkage works well enough if it's unworn and axial play at the lever pivot is shimmed out. Besides differences in the linkage type I believe there are variations in the gear change lever pivot in that some h...
