Re: Start up & Warming Behavior
Actually, it goes well beyond simple carb "mirroring". Since the carb adjustments are dynamic in nature (engine running), they must be built on the foundation that all static adjustments of the engine and ignition system are "perfect". So before any carb adjustment can start, you...

Re: 1979 r65 battery
A disadvantage of sealed batteries is they are less tolerant of overcharging. Unless the float charge voltage is chosen very carefully there is a real risk of doing more harm than good. They just don't need a permanently connected float charger so I don't use one. If the bike should remain unused f...

Re: 1979 R65 battery
Battery choice is going to depend a lot on whether or not your particular bike has a kick start lever ! The first battery purchased for a '79 R100 was a wet cell of the lawn mower type (~$80). The battery fit snugly into the cradle, but the battery posts (with reversed position) were too high ...

Re: Start up & Warming Behavior
Let's not split hairs, brother. What I'm saying is that before carb synchronizing can be attempted on a new-to-you bike or while fitting new carbs, all the static carburetor settings need to be exactly the same. All jets matching, same float levels, pilot settings, needles, needle clip positions, sa...

Re: Wheel Recall ( Snowflake ) - The Definitive Truth
Thanks for the welcome. I don't know those aliases but live close to and have been over to BoxerWorks in Wintersville. I worked on bikes back in the 60's and 70's, so have met a lot of the older players in the Atlanta bike scene. Now a retired engineer, and play around at a local vintage shop. That'...

Re: Getting a grip
I work in a bike shop and we have tried nearly everything over the years. We found that spray paint works the best. Give it about 15 minutes to "set". To remove the left grip simply jam your compressed air nozzle into the right end of the handlebar. Twist the left grip and it will jump off...

Re: Start up & Warming Behavior
► You are correct. When you have multiple carbs, all carbs need identical setup and adjustment for the bike to run correctly. Good find. ► I have started numerous brands of bikes with the Mikuni carb "upgrade" and they all behave as your BMW. They won't start without the chokes ON. Once th...

Re: Wheel Recall ( Snowflake ) - The Definitive Truth
This is an excellent thread ! And thanks to the OP for the thoroughly complete record of his adventure. You might have guessed why I'm so interested in this subject. Yep, I'm the 3rd owner of a 1979 RT with a un-gussetted cast front wheel dated 1/79 !! My adventure begins tomorrow AM. Wish me luck. ;)
