/6 Side covers

Post by jagarra »

Morning guys,

I am in the process of finding some of the missing or broken items for my 90/6 made on 9/73, so it is a Euro model. I have been checking out e-bay for side covers and the question of the differences between civilian model and official model motorcycles came up. I went to MAXBMW site, checked out the microfiche and see that there are two different parts numbers for the same side cover. (both primed, no color) Do any of you know if there is a difference?? Is it material ??

Not absolutely sure, but I think the police solo seats would require clearance for the front hinge/mounting bolt, necessitating a different right side cover than those standard on the civilian model.

Thanks Tim,

I didn't think about different seats, but the microfiche indicated there was a "official"" model for both sides. The reason this came up is a left side cover came up painted "Police Colors" green. I thought it would be an interesting color for my BMW, but I wanted to make sure it would fit. In comparisions to other on fleabay, all the lefts look the same picture wise.

regards,

If your /6 carries a 9/73 build date that means that it was built after vacation break and was intended to be sold in 1974. Those date have nothing to do with whether your bike is a US or Euro model.

I once owned one of the first R75/5 SWBs and it carried a build date that indicated that it was built in the Fall of 1969.

Ken,

When the bike was sold may be material, but when I run the serial it comes up as an ECE model not US. Us models started at 49 as 1st two digits, this one is 40. I checked both fiches that came up for a standard US series and by vin number, no difference as far as side covers.

Ken,

Not sure what the major differences were, the addition of side reflectors for US models made be part of the changes. I make it a practice to check between the models when I find on part on fleabay, just to make sure it isn't one of the differences. Here is a link to a site the has production figures by month and serials. With US and other production data. http://bmbikes.co.uk/chassispages/enginechassis800.htm
