'82 R100RS 1MK Restoration

Post by Toga »

Hi all,

Im very excited to have found this forum.
I only read a couple of threads to realize I should be a member here.

In January 1983, aged 19, I graduated from my then 2nd bike a honda 250 and bought 'Betsy' my candy apple red 1982 R100RS with 800klm's on the clock. I was always riding, non stop, every where around the country and back, dozens of times over. Much has been done over the years but she was getting tired, again. In 2010 she was taken to a private mechanic for some major work and was 80% pulled apart before the poor bloke passed away unexpectedly. Shortly after collecting her in boxes, I feel apart with major kidney failure and have spent till now recovering.

It is now July 2013, she is calling me again and I am now ready & healthy enough for the challenge... and it will be.
The odometer is 30k shy of being clocked, again ... but this time is the BIG clocking, she sits with a current odometer reading of 970,337klm.

Though I have done the basic service work myself and been involved in some of the more major work, I am not much of a mechanic as far as tools & workspace goes.
I intend to do as much as I can myself at home.

Im sure I will have many questions, some already answered on my first readings here.

Please - Buy all means... treat me as a mechanical idiot and If anything comes to mind that you feel I should be aware of... dont hesitate to say something. ie: recessing value issues ive read a little about so far...

Great forum, looking forward to reading more !

Cheers
Joe

Gidday Toga, welcome.

That's a shitload of k's! You must like your RS. I can relate to that.
There's plenty of help here so jump in whenever you need.

Where in Oz are you? There's a few of us on here that are form Oz. Very cheeky too, some of us.

! Wow! You realise that at today's fuel prices that's about $100K of fuel to do that many k's. You could almost raise a child to adulthood for that... almost.

Gday Toga,
Sounds like we are the same vintage, but it never occurred to me in 1983 to buy a BMW. You must be very sensible.
What components have lasted the distance? Or is it a case of grandpa's axe?

Look forward to more posts and pics are always appreciated.

cheers

Gidday Fellas,

Toga, what an excellent intro story to throw up at the site, loved reading it and I'm glad you are on the mend and thinking of rekindling that flame you have with your RS...

I wish you the best of luck and you have found a good bunch of blokes to help you out..

I'm with Mal.

Pictures or it didn't happen!

The flying blood clot is just about my favourite colour scheme on a bike.

Welcome Toga... to yet another Ozzie.

If you're inland from the Tweed River, then you won't be too far from Shell'be in Nimbin or Buzz in Brissie. There's a bunch of airhead riders from SEQ that are pretty active too.
There's also a local guru up your way by the name of Ray Peake who is spoken of in glowing terms.
Here's a snap of some of the SEQ airheads...

They like their RS's up there, despite the hot & humid weather.

Welcome aboard, Joe. And good luck with the restoration.

That is a very impressive kilometerage. I look forward to reading that you've got her to the mega-klik. There can't be too many that have made it that far.

Here's some more RS goodness, including a couple of red ones, at a gathering in southern NSW in April.

High Toga, welcome to the funny farm. We've also got a BMW whisperer here in Nimbin by the name of Michael. He's doing some engine and transmission work on my 90S. Give us a call when you get a chance and we'll kick some tires and tell some lies.

Hi all,

Thanks for the warm welcome.

A friend told me I should petition BMW to get them to do the 1MK restoration... as per mentioned, probably not many have been to the moon & back.

Thanks for the pics, inspiring me to do a half decent job... on a tight budget.
Both Ray Peake & Michael in Lillian Rock were on my short list to contact, very soon.
Ill give you a bellbe - Shellbe :D

I will bring things up to date over the weekend with pic & Q's of where I am at thus far including some happy snaps, but for now my favorite comaprison shots....
Graduation Day !!!
