BMW Rear Mud Flap

I seem to remember two versions of the flap. The early one had molded ridges on it and a molded 3-D roundel. The later version is flat and has the roundel silk screened on it.

I seem to remember the early flap as fitting inside the rear fender just right. And because of the flat shape and the contours of the fender the later flap fits nowhere very well.

That's how I'd do it with a painted guard too.
How well does it fit into the guard on the inside?

Steve, this one is definitely designed to go on the outside, but with new holes in mud flap and a some trimming and it should be fine. I should have just taken some generic rubber and cut one for the inside; I could have saved some money. In fact that's what I'm planning on doing for the front. I think BMW's reasoning for the hokey design was to allow an easier install since it required drilling holes.

I would mount it on the inside and ,if possible, make 2 rectangular plates with 2 bolts (studs) welded on
to mount it. Epoxy or VHB tape the plates to the inside of the fender on either side and attach the mudguard
with acorn nuts. That way you are not drilling the fender at all.

I would think that it would look better mounted on the inside....but create a little shelf for mud to accumulate on.

On the other hand....why would you want one at all? Our fenders already cover a lot of the wheel....and are not really begging to be drilled. Are you worried about shooting dirt up at the guy behind you?

I just thought it might keep the Reynold's rack and bag ends cleaner in the winter, but probably wishful thinking.

If you are running a bigger tire than "OEM", be careful that INSIDE doesn't rub on the tire.
You won't like that!!

Ken, the one's I have all have the molded ridges designed to fit the contours of the mudguard, but a stenciled roundel. It fits fine on the outer mudguard where the contours match.
I wonder if the stencil was a cost improvement over the molded 3-D roundel, and dates it as a later version?

Jean, you made a good argument for mounting it on the outside. Also, road side tire repairs, I think, would be easier by unscrewing two screws on one side to clear for tire removal.

My flap is the smooth, silk screened, with the contour ribs on the inside flap surface to fit the outside contour of the fender.

Ray, I found mine used on e-bay in nice condition. I think Bob's or Hucky's was selling new flaps, but they were quite expensive.
