ATF ?

Post by dougie »

So my Honda Hawk manual says "ATF or equivalent".
What would be the equivalent :?:
Are there shortcomings to using ATF, or did someone think: "Hey! We could sell them fork oil"?
I've spent most of my money on women, motorcycles, and beer.
The rest of it I just wasted.

Automotive hoists usually call for AW32 or ATF as a hydraulic fluid.

The one I know is from the first link, the one with the expletive:

http://www.internetslang.com/WTF-meaning-definition.asp

But there appear to be other meanings:

http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/WTF

Let the degradation begin!!

An equivalent of ATF would be approx. 7.5 wt fork oil.

In the same way proper motorcycle oil can't have friction modifiers because it has to allow clutch plates to grip, transmissions also have clutches and brake bands so ATF must have the same restriction. Thinking that minimum friction is what good forks are about I wonder if ATF is as slippery as proper fork oil ?

Having said that ATF was used in forks for many years and it is a nice color.

Brings back memories of the mid-60s when I was working at a Honda dealership while going to college.

One of my jobs, besides uncrating and assembling the new Hondas, was to drain out the fish oil in the front forks -and that stuff did stink- then replace it with the good stuff. We used Bel-Ray at the time.
