Re: Which Steering Head Bearings for R50/2 ?

Incidentally - to get back to the subject; I replaced the steering head ball bearings with taper bearings - very easy to do and the R50/2 now flies along in a reasonably straight line. PS all the water at Halley was melted from snow shovelled from the surface into a shaft which led to a melt tank. (...

Re: R90s Voltmeter ...again!

Wonderful - Thanks for all the help - I'll pry off the cover and adjust the pot. It is much more satisfying to have a meter providing accurate information rather than constantly applying a correction!

Re: R90s Voltmeter ...again!

I am sure that It is the BMW meter reading high ....It reads nearly 17v on the voltmeter when it is really c.13.5v across the battery (Checked with two different meters to be sure!)

As I also cannot find an adjuster I'll look at the resistor option.

Thanks everyone

R90s Voltmeter ...again!

I understand that is an analog meter (what else!) - many of which can be adjusted for accuracy.....Mine works just fine but reads consistently high. Anyone know if there an adjuster on the meter somewhere?

Please to hear from another OAE Duane... Most guys have never stuck to a steel pole or seen solid mercury! and ....Yes the 'mechanics' in Antarctica were excellent - The guy who looked after our generators could fix anything - when the balloon tracking Radar burnt out he fixed it; including rewindin...

Re: Which Steering Head Bearings for R50/2 ?

TENACITY - the quality or fact of being able to grip something firmly Well what did I learn? - there was a desolate place where I spent 2 years with a "Black Hand Gang" from whom I learnt a lot about mechanical things of all description. As the spares only came in once a year they had to ...

Re: Which Steering Head Bearings for R50/2 ?

The answer (below) from Mark Huggett who developed and produced them over 30 years ago for BMW's and probably a deserves a medal for the improvement. They are not a standard size which is why the dimensions are not widely listed. Although automotive bearings are common these are not on the shelf of ...

Re: Which Steering Head Bearings for R50/2 ?

OK Thank you - I have now found Mark Huggetts diagramatic parts list it seems excellent. Thank you for pointing me to his site. I have asked him for the dimensions of the taper bearings. This has all arisen because I was given a brand new set of taper bearings (no dimensions marked on them) when I b...

Re: Which Steering Head Bearings for R50/2 ?

Interesting if BMW had special bearings made when there are so many off the shelf taper bearings around. Now I am more than curious!

Even special bearings have a size...I'll report back when I find out.

Best wishes
