Re: '83 R65 Not cold starting

I mentioned earlier that your original coil was 1.5 ohms and that the 0.7 ohm coil wasn't introduced until much later in the 90's together with an ECU that could handle the higher current. The later ECU will probably have variable dwell and auto cut off to protectant itself from overheating. Unless...

Re: '83 R65 Not cold starting

All, The crackomatic coil was indeed causing the no-start condition. I swapped it out with a 0.7 Ohm (Euromotoelectric suggests the 1.5 Ohm would have been just fine too) and it started right up. I replaced plug wires and caps less than a year ago, so I just swapped those over. I even pulled one plu...

I will be both thrilled and flustered when you turn out to be right! Placing an order now...

I'll report back after replacement, for better or worse. Thank you for the input.

Re: '83 R65 Not cold starting

I nearly placed an order on EME yesterday for a 0.7 Ohm coil but hesitated - I never like throwing parts. Given the state of this coil though, it might be justified.

Re: '83 R65 Not cold starting

The only visible indicator of an issue is that my intake boots are wet on the carb-side. That implies you're getting fuel. Are the slides lifting when you crank the engine over? (you need air too) (I'm assuming you lined up the diaphragm notches when you replaced them.) Yep - I did indeed line up t...

Re: '83 R65 Not cold starting

It has been running before. I've actually done carbs gaskets and o-rings twice - once about a year ago (as part of a larger bike refresh), and then again just last week to try and address this cold start issue. I don't remember having issues after the first time, but then, my memory is foggy with th...

Re: '83 R65 Not cold starting

Kurt, the enricheners were on the correct sides.

gspd, just went out and checked. Carb off, plug out, and cycled 8-10 times. 135psi on left, 140psi on right.

Re: '83 R65 Not cold starting

Thanks, Kurt!

The handlebar enrichener lever has been relocated to pulls nears the carbs, and they are moving from fully off to fully on.

Them being reversed from left to right, however, isn't impossible. I may go swap them around and see what results!

'83 R65 Not cold starting

Trying to get my 1983 R65 going, and cannot get it to cold start without significant crank time (about 1.5 batteries worth). If I can get it to start, it will subsequently start fine once warm (pretty common, as I've read). At best, the bike will "catch" a little for every 2-3 seconds of c...
