Hi, sorry for delay in reporting back - I finally got back in the garage at the weekend, removed the starter motor and found that the gear mechanism was indeed stuck in the 'engaged' position. Thanks Rob and gspd, I'll get back in the garage in a few weeks and have a good look at the starter/solenoid. Fingers crossed, we've found the problem.

I found a 60 amp relay, but unfortunately the starter motor kicked in again as soon as I connected the battery. When this happens, when I hear movement in the starter motor I disconnect the battery leads quickly, fearing the starter motor won't disengage if the engine starts. Out of curiosity and po...

I checked the starter button with a continuity meter, it appears to operate as it should. However reading about the possible relay issue - the generic one I have mounted is rated at 40 amps. Thanks for this, I'll source a 60 amp one and report back.
