I recently changed the shoes on my 89GS even though the old ones had plenty of friction material left on them. Every time I have changed the wheels on the bike I have given the shoes a real good cleaning with a wire brush and it has never made any significant or lasting change to brake performance. ...

I would suggest two things that will make it easier
1. Try and stay in a built up area as much as possible in the early stages, following the leader helps with the re-programming needed.
2. Put a large'ish arrow pointing to the left with the words "Keep Left" somewhere in view.

Welcome Alfons, lovely machine....but I'm a little confused.
Alfons doesn't sound much like a german name and that isn't a german flag on the back of the helmet in the first picture.

I found out quickly that my Thor Quadrant boots are not water proof or even water resistance, no matter how tight I latched the buckles.
