I've always relied on the kindness of strangers ...

So thoughtful ...
I'll use my smallest hammer Native/5, and I'll hold it in both hands to avoid hitting my thumb.

Re: Drive Ratios for the RS.

It's a '78 Jean, taking its orders from the coil according to my diagram. The earthing points are due for a clean, so I intend to have a look around under the tank. If the wire is doing its job, I'll crack open the tach and check for beasties and signs of friction. Somewhere, I have an ancient rpm c...

Re: Drive Ratios for the RS.

"It appears your tach is not doing well at higher rpms." Thanks for that confirmation Jean, it does seem to fit the clues -- I'll have to work out what it should be reading, and make some comparisons. Perhaps there's some extra Ohms in there that I can shake out somehow. Anyone been into ...

Re: Drive Ratios for the RS.

Sorry Jean, forgot to mention my tyres - Heidenau front and rear , (4 .00 / 18), and very satisfactory so far. I'm not sure if the dual-plugging will make much difference, or whether you also have that mod, but at an indicated 3,000rpm, there's all the urge I need for the fairly small roads I usuall...

Re: Drive Ratios for the RS.

Greetings Jean, and thanks for the info: when idling, the revs seems a bit fast at 1100, and the red light glows around 950, the needle shows no signs of uncertainty in use, so I am assuming (!) all is well. 6089494 puts it in the 33/11 bracket to be sure, and identifies it as an English import I be...

Some Numbers, (and a puzzle).

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/6307/p1010393q.jpg The pic is 90 degrees rotated for global equality. So, on the F/D we have 33/11 On the speedo face W - 1,112 On the wheel rim, there's eleven thirty-seconds of an inch (18 mm) of play between wheel and universal joint, three and one thirty-second i...

Re: Drive Ratios for the RS.

I'll hose the cowmuck off the F/D and have a gander Rob.
Thanks 2valve, you've reminded me that the speedo was changed, sorry not to have mentioned that earlier, my thoughts were all transmission related.
I'll look for numbers on the dial as well.
I'm enjoying the erudition, thanks all.

Re: Drive Ratios for the RS.

Thanks for all the feedback, I'll check the markings and compare with a turn-count at the wheel. I find it hard to see thirty-odd years of use in the bike, but I can't assume we're still on the first time round either. Most fasteners are in really good shape, which is very cheering. I can feel slop ...

Drive Ratios for the RS.

When my '78 RS has 3,000 rpm on the clock, it's doing 60 mph in top gear. Does anyone have any info relating to which final drive I've got, and what other options are available please ? Occasionally my foot looks for a higher gear, and knowing little of the bike's history, or actual mileage, I somet...

Re: I made a little box

I think the little hole in the spade is there for a reason Chuey. It will reduce the amount of heat that gets conducted down to the plastic. I'd tin the spade, tin the wire, put it through the hole, and twist it round itself. Then solder only the very end of the spade, hot and quick. If risky, I'd u...
