I agree with Ken, the cluch should not drag.
Something got mis-assembled. I have not had a post 81 clutch carrier apart myself, so I can't point you to any likley things to look for, but start with the throw out bearing assembly. Make sure that all the bitts are in there and in the right order. Do you have a Clymer or Haynes manual? Maybe find a good pic of the parts breakdown on the interweb.
On early /5s there where spacers between the rear friction plate and the flyweel. These are not used when replacing that plate with a new later plate. If you did there was problems. Is there any thing like that going on with the post 81 setup?
Someone else will have to step in and help.

The staarting point is to set the rear actuator lever 90 degrees to the back of the tranny.. and is to be adjusted so that the distance from the cable end to the boss on the tranny case is exactly 201mm. The hand lever should be adjusted to have about 5mm of free play.
Check this out, it my be helpful. It is a bit of reading and the focus info is way near the end titled "Clutch Adjustment" and highlighted in Yellow.
Most likely this will open the door to solve the problem.. Happy Holidays.
