Cold Toes, need advice.

I wanted to test some new gear for the trip to Big Bend this
month so I went riding for 60 miles today. It was a nice 20°
out with snow on the sides of the road.... and I did pretty good.

* New Jacket , Tourmaster Jett. (works better than my old mesh)
* New Jacket Liner, tourmaster synergy heated (not vest).
* New pants, Fieldsheer dont know model / with quilted liner.
* New Heated Grips, SymTec film type under grip.
* HJC snow mobile heated visor (not powered up)
* Full face mask.
* Joe Rocket Gloves, Winter dont know model / with liners
* Silk thermals
* Joe rocket boots, dont know model / with 2 pairs of socks.

Hands gave me a problem for the first 30 miles.
I brought them out of the wind one at a time to warm up and
after that they were..... just okay. The way the SymTecs are
positioned, they mainly heated the palms and not the finger
tips. Next time I'm in there I'll see if I can rotate them more
forward but the power wire might keep me from doing that.
Grips can get down right hot! I know what to do here and will
work on something to keep the wind off. Should be fine.

Feet started getting cold around 40 miles.
Not sure what to do here. Was thinking those chemical warmer
pads but that might get too hot and would be tight in my boot.
Here I have something that needs work. Tips?

Well, I can't find a picture of them online, but Heinrich used to make FOOT shields to go along with their leg shields.

If you had two pairs of socks on; consider you may have actually reduced your insulation by displacing air with material. It's not the down feathers that keep you warm. It's the air that they trap. Also if you are wearing steel toed boots, they are very cold. There are heated insoles made by Gerbing...The final solution.

I wish they had had those in the Sixties. My Dad, being diabetic, suffered from cold feet - especially on the Winter Camporees he insisted we go on with the Boy Scouts.

All he had were some really lame electric socks that (as I remember) didn't do a lot of anything except put dead batteries in landfills. If I remember correctly, they had a leather pouch that went around your waist to hold two 6v lantern batteries.

I remember quite well tossing a 9v "transistor radio" battery in my pocket (swapped out of the smoke detector) to bring to work for recycling - in the same pocket with my loose change.
Suddenly my leg started getting warm...

Nice, but I would want them to come up a few more inches (several more cm?). I can't stand short socks, esp in boots!

Now that brings up an interesting point.

What do skiers wear... wool?

Neoprene Socks might work too.
I know they use them for wade fishing and kayaking and is available locally.
19° and offically 5" of snow today but if I get out I might go look at a pair.

What about some pieces of tin to deflect hot air from behind the cylinders down to your feet?

+1 on the Hippo Hands. You might evean find that the heated grips are keepng you fingertips warm, but you can't tell because they are out in the wind. I have used my HHs all winter with my summer gloves and have only had cool fingers after an hour. That's without heated grips.

Plus my hands stay dry. No mater how waterproof your gloves, they cool much faster with water on the outside of them.

I have been thinking of making toe splashgaurds similar to Heinrich ones that Rob is talking about. Just haven't had the time yet.
