My sons second ride on a road bike. Five minutes earlier, he had his first ride on Doug's r65 at the alpine rally.
Now he's really keen to get an r65.
An r65 falls within the acceptable power to weight ratio for learner riders in Australia.
I've been showing my son Jordan pictures of r65's for a while.
I have also created a fear within myself.....
Edited to add this vid was taken sunday afternoon at the rally after 95% of 'em pissed off!
They do it every year which has us baffled 'cause monday is a public holiday.
There would have been a couple hundred or more bikes.

Well, two things spring to mind:
If he can ride the RS that slow on grass/uneven terrain, he can probably handle the r65 w/ aplomb.
You are aware of his plan. Myself, I purchased my first bike using cash from afterschool & summer job, without parental knowledge or consent. Enlisting the aid of my boss who owned a truck, we brought it home and BAM! I was a motorcycle owner/rider.
I didn't have a ready made riding partner, though.

Keep telling him -
MINE! NOT YOURS, MINE!!!
MINE! NOT YOURS, MINE!!!

I've spent most of my money on women, motorcycles, and beer.
The rest of it I just wasted.

Ah now Jeff, he pulled that ride off pretty well, didn't he? He made it look really easy, in fact. He's a great young bloke - a chip off the ol' block. He managed his 'rite of passage' very well, and I look forward to enjoying his company at future Alpine Rallies. Yours too, of course.

Jeff
He looked very comfortable on my R65. I was really pleased that you got him on it.. If there are any missgivings, you can blame it on my bad influence!

Re: some rally pics
Ready for take-off. A leisurely 300 km comin' up

There were some excellent stretches of dry black ribbon through the white snow.
As well as some wet, icy??? sections.
Loaded two up for touring is like driving a semi trailer through the mountains.
1st gear maneuvering on uneven ground can produce some real frame/fork flex
but it is remarkably stable in most situations on the road.

Saturday night around the fire. Charlie is the one with the halo on his head,
blessing the rally

I had a hand in keeping the fire going. Nearly got me fingers burnt.

Sunday morning muster

Monday morning, pack up, go home.

Refueling at Tumut, NSW. I prefer metal fronted bowsers for holding my tank bag. Only pulled the front off one bowser so far.

If I ever have a need for a GS, I might need one like this, without a top box.

The air brushing looks like it was done with a 4" brush. Nice bike otherwise.
