40mm Bing rebuild: question

Post by hools100RS »

Having aquired an '81 R100RS recently, I'm in the process of checking, sorting, fettling, etc, before putting him on the road. (yes, it's a him!! Big pipes are a give away!!) I thought I'd dismantle and clean the carbys and check the needle jets for ovality or wear; tops off, diaphrams appear OK, but the slides on both appear to be sitting 'cockeyed' with the slide cutaway not square to the carby bore but at about a 20 degree angle. Shouldn't the cutaways be in the middle of the carby mouth? :?: (Diaphram 'lug" is locating in the carby top recess correctly.) I can see that a less than careful change of diaphram might contribute to the cutaway not being positioned dead centre, but I'm in unfamiliar territory here and would appreciate your views. Jets appear OK by the way!! Cheers, Hools.

The diaphragm also has another 'lug' that fits into a recess in the slide.
Remove the 4 screws to check if its in place.

Gidday Hools, I haven't got my carbs off at the moment but I think my slides sit with the cutaway square to the bore.
I might just go and take the tops off my carbs to alter the needle positin so I'll report back.
I think there is also a little guide pin that keeps the slide in the right position.
Aint it funny how 'ya can't remember things you've seen dozens of times. :?

Went out and checked as you suggested GSPD. :) You Da Man!!!!! The lug wasn't anywhere near its recess on the slide, hence the problem. I'd done a pair years ago but they were Stromberg diaphrams and I can't recall the lower lug. Must have done!! Anyway, thanks man!!!! That's one thing I won't have to worry about!! Hools.

Hey Jeff! GSPD sorted me out on that one!! It was all clear to me on removing those 4 slide screws holding down the diaphram. Still, even with the cutaway not exactly 'square' there didn't appear to be any idling or slow running issues. 'Focke Wulf' is tidying up nicely and I'm a new battery and a front tyre away from a roadworthy! Don't know if I'll make the run in a few weeks. I might still be confined to warmer duties!!! Hools.

Lord of the bings my arse! A pin? Reah right.

Well my needles are now in the second notch.
It's great to get it done nice and quick. It's also nice to see a spring sitting on the seat after it's all buttoned up.

Runs like a gem.

Our Bings have that hard chrome center shaft to locate the slide so air pressure is not pushing and rattling it against the actual carb body. The actual carb bodies never seem to wear out.

Slot/locating pin slides in general aren't as durable and eventually cause the actual carb body to wear out.
