Is "a" considered a word?

Would I need to consider how many "a"'s were in an essay if the requirement was eg, 5000 words?

Yes, "a" is a word. In the new way we measure word count, yes, I think it counts, as the word count is done by the word processing software, and I think the software counts actual words. The old standard was the same for essays, typing, newspapers, etc., and it was based on the physical size of the document and an average word size of, I think 5 letters. So, every "250 word" document was exactly the same physical length. That makes sense with typing fonts where every letter takes up one space, and is really handy when you're trying to fit things into a newspaper column, but with word processing, we use all kinds of fonts where different letters take up different amounts of space.
