Hyrdo unit brake fluid refresh on ABS II

Post by Dave Backmarker »

I've researched this a bit (Clymer, Hayes, BMW MOA, etc) and I see that there are descriptions on how to refresh the brake fluid on the integrated ABS III hydro unit but I cannot find any references for ABS II. I've removed the gas tank and looked at the hydro unit and nothing jumped at me as a likely fitting for refreshing the brake fluid. When I've refreshed the brake fluid on the front system, it appears that only the fluid from the master cylinder at the handle-bar to the calipers is being replaced. Any thoughts?

Is this the 2000 RT in your sig? If so, it's a fairly simple procedure according to Jim Von Baden's maintenance video, although you will need a funny little funnel that screws into the top of the ABS unit. The video covers the hexhead bikes, but I'm pretty sure that the procedure is the same.

I still get confused with the ABS 1/2/3 systems - but this link may be of some assistance ...

Don't fear the ABS system, there not that difficult to maintain. Just be careful to not get any air or dirt in the system. Follow the instruction and build yourself a Mini Stan for bleeding the brake circuit.
I installed Speed Bleeders makes changing brake fluid very easy.

Thanks for the responses. The video and references to the funny funnel all pertain to ABS III which shipped starting on the R1150RT and other models that year (2001 I think). The Hydro unit of the ABS II does not have a brake bleed fitting. I've picked up a set of speed bleeders for the brakes and clutch but I'm still thinking that there is brake fluid in the hydro unit that doesn't touch the separate front or rear ABS brakes.
Yes, my bike is the one in my IBM, a R1100RT with Ohlins a Techlushion and braided brake lines.
