OK the farther I get into this thing the more questions I have. I'm confused about some seemingly contradictory instruction about removing the input shaft ball bearing. Both Haynes and Clymer say when removing the input shaft bearing (Ball bearing on cover side) to do so with the bushing at the same time. On Joergs site, describing his 5 speed rebuild, he says: When changing the bearing on the input shaft, make sure you do not pull off the metal shim that is located just underneath the bearing. Scroll down under the heading: Replacing the bearings http://jhau.maliwi.de/mot/gearbox.html#bearings

For clarity I'm talking about #10 on this parts fiche - http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/ ... d=04302013. It sits real close to the bearing and is almost the same diameter and it won't allow my puller to grab just the bearing.

Thanks in advance.

Don't pull the thin plate with the bearing!
I bought a bearing splitter to pull that bearing, and it was still a little difficult.
Maybe take the shaft to an engine reconditioner if that is an easier option.

Edit, I can't say what will happen if the thin plate is pulled with the bearing other than it may be damaged.

Here's the fiche for those of us who can't visualize transmission internals: Image

I'm also wondering what the potential damage could really be, it's only a $5 part... anyway, bearing separator is on the way, just bought one from amazon.

Me109, did you replace any of the gear bushings, circlips or washers as a preventative measure? I've read these should be checked and replaced if worn but there's apparently no measurements to check them against.

I can't remember exactly which ones I replaced.
I bought all of the washers and clips that I could see on motobins site.
But I don't believe all were replaced...........I know I was happy with what was in there.
Memory fading.
