Weird Piece After Removing Front Cover

Post by captmako »

Well, newbie here to Airheads. Took the front cover off my '86 R80 naked bike. All looks normal although
in the bottom of the cover is a soft-spongy circular object. About the size of a quarter. Holes around the inside of
the foam piece with one side sporting a larger partial-hole in the center. The center holes does not go all the way
through the piece. I could find no obvious corresponding position whence it came. Looks like it might fit on the end of
an electrical shaft. Anyone seen these before? I just have an Iphone pic; could send it to someone's telephone # if that
would work for any help identifying this sucker. I guess the bike was fine without this piece or did I jar it loose when removing the cover. Was not wet with oil and has no signs of being stuck on anything with glue or adhesive. Did a little
kid just stuff something in the cover inlets or something? Weird.

I hope you mean the "front cover" that covers the alternator, etc. and not really the timing chain cover. (?)
It is a PITA to remove the timing chain cover...you wouldn't want to do it unless you really HAD TO.
To answer the original question...I don't recognize it either, but none of MY bikes are newer than '78 ...it might have gotten sucked in through the holes/slots. I'll check in the workshop manual tho...
Be happy it didn't get caught in the alternator.

Hi Jean, you are right. My bad - the front cover vs. timing chain cover. Good point about being
caught in the alternator. The mysterious piece is light-weight, too.

Yessir, at least it wasn't a scalpel. I'll put the cover back on and keep on keepin-on. Thanks all.

I don't know how new you are to the internet, capt, but around here it doesn't exist if there are no photos posted.

Garnet, she is too old to need one.

I get private emails asking about those new bikes (anything past 1975) and I have to explain that I have no experience on new bikes.
