Possible valve issue now....

This is for the discussion of Motorcycling. The art, the science, the theory of all things related to our favorite sport... riding motorcycles.

Possible valve issue now....

Post by dwerbil »

1984 RS, 93k. Seems the left exhaust valve lash has been tightening up the past few years. (valve recession?)

Now the exhaust valve adjustment bolt on the rocker arm is practically bottomed out where there are no threads left on the bolt to adjust. I was able to get it adjusted -this- time.

Left cylinder @TDC. Note bolt threads, rocker arm attitudes...

Have adjusted valves apx. every 6k miles or when idle gets a bit rough. Each valve setting, the left exhaust is
always tight the past few years.

Heat discoloration, if that's what it is, this is the first time I've seen this on the
rocker arms. Never have ridden the bike hard. No long idle times either.
Right side head looks normal with valve adjustments holding for a long time.

Heat discoloration? Left side, again...

More blow-by showing up now...

Getting time for a valve job?

Yep, it's either valve stretch, seat burning or valve deforming. Either way, if it breaks it will cost WAY more than a rebuilt head...

YES. Do it NOW.

To rudely paraphrase a common saying: "you can pay me now, or let me roughly screw you in the ass with no lube later.' This is one of those situations where putting it off is not saving money, but horribly wasting it.

I would replace that rocker arm, as well.

Put a dollar in and see if you get three back.
If so, put in a hundred...
