Duane,, so "forma gauge" may be out. Is that your personal prefrence or is it generaly known to be a inferior method? Have you ever used it?

It's a bit slower process (thus not favored for a shop), but it requires no custom plate or machined case, so that makes it preferable (or, perhaps, the only option) for someone without those tools. I've never used the "clay" process, but I've used the strips where you compare how the colored strips have been stretched (squished) to assess clearance when checking plain main bearings.Duane Ausherman wrote:I have never used the plasti-guage stuff for measuring end play. You squish a strip and compare it to the bands on a reference sheet. I adjusted my post above to make it (maybe) a little clearer.
