Not trying to beat a dead horse here, but I finally found pictures of the two types of bracket side by side on Huckys website and, while the ones I have are longer than stock /5, the R90S ones are indeed longer still. Huckys price is better than MaxBMW, too.

If nothing more than to even "further beat a dead horse..." I purchased a pair of NOS NLA front stalks that had the old BMW tags on the plastic bag (by then far yellowed...) that were the correct part number and their ship date from Germany was '81 or '82 if I recall correctly. At any rate, even those stalks I currently have mounted are just a bit too long in the tube area. With the pods installed, there is about an eighth of an inch gap that'll need the same treatment - cut off. I was too lazy to do it last year, but I might mention for anyone that has not considered it, at least how mine are installed and the way the wires run though them, cutting them on the bike would be an easy way to cut the wires, or never be able to re-retrieve them easily after pushing them back into the stalk to safely cut the ends off on the bike. I have a bicycle spoke I grabbed to bend the end and capture the ends of the wires so I can shove them back up inside the stalks/bucket ears - out of the way for when I hack the extra 1/8" or less extra off of them and that "should" make it easy to pull the wires back through - and with no damage. (Another note, the slot in these for the bolt, is as well too long - actually those slots are longer than what needs cut off to get the pods to install correctly - universal fit for a later bike???)
I'll let you know how that goes, but the moral of the story is that I don't think BMW made even the replacements short enough for all that many years after the bikes were in service. Mine clearly are not as long as those you have, or the even longer ones, but they're certainly not "right" either...
Better solution now is notice this as the OP did, BEFORE they've been installed!

The first set of these I installed on my '74, and as noted the aluminum turn signals didn't slide all the way down, BUT when I put the later black plastic turn signal housings on, the extra length was necessary, because the clamp to hold them on the stalk is internal. In other words, you can't mount the black plastic turn signals on the original /5 brackets,

Interesting. I have not seen what those plastic ones look like and the difference in the mounting to know exactly what you mean.
I was pondering after I wrote that, without either taking the lens and reflector out to take a gander inside or loosening the hold-down bolt, sliding them off and peering inside to see if the actual end of the "too long" stalk is what is bottoming out and keeping the old '71 style aluminum housings with reflectors from sliding all of the way in, or if rather it's actually that they would seat properly if the square slot were just a little deeper. Unless you or others have the answer, I'll report back when I get around to it. Neither should be much of an affair; though curiously, you said yours were a bit shy of a 1/2' inch of seating; mine are no more than an 1/8" from installing all of the way. Perhaps the 80's vintage ones with correct part number, while still not correct were a bit different than the ones in your picture??? Don't know "yet."
Thanks for posting - I'll update...
