This is for the discussion of Motorcycling. The art, the science, the theory of all things related to our favorite sport... riding motorcycles.

ps: What if the wrong end of the island falls off?
Actually, it's not Ma Nature: Hawaiian legend has it that the goddess Pele lives in the volcano, and the destruction is evidence of her anger. Seems she's angry a lot, lately... We joke that this place is like a disaster theme park, with all the volcanos, earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, floods, drought, plagues of rodents etc. Just another day in (cough) "paradise"! There's no telling what would happen should the south end of the island drop into the ocean, the seabed is actually tilting under the weight of the island as the volcanos add new land... Geologic features that used to be underwater on the north end of the island are now several feet above the high tide mark  ...and the black sand beach was slowly sinking into the ocean, as evidenced by the palm trees growing below the high tide level: Kalapana the way it was: Image Here is the lava flow approaching town: Image and a beforeand after shot of the main store /cafe in Kalapana: Image

If you do decide to come, give me a couple months advance notice and I will try to get two BMWs running at the same time, and we'll go for a ride!

I was over in that area in the early 80's and went swimming in the Queen's Bath, now long gone. And there again in 1990, man what a differance.

I have very fine (hazy) memories of the Big Island. 8-)

Tim and others

There seems to be a hell of a lot of tectonic activity in the Pacific rim over the last few years. Major plates re-adjusting themselves I'd guess. South America, New Zealand, Indosnesia, even OZ had a nasty this year. I know Haiti's on the other side but still a lot of activity.

The western seaboard of the US has been a bit quiet though. Mmmmm :?
