When I think of starting these bikes I like to think of building up energy by using the kick start to get the engine going.
So the process for me is to pump the engine using the kick start to create the kinetic energy.
Works for me.
That's how airhead kickstarters got a reputation for being weak and prone to breaking.
I would highly discourage that method.
The designers and engineers did not anticipate that people would do that.
Pre-electric start airheads came standard with 'first kick' starting.
All other makes had 'last kick' starting.
A primer kick or two with the ignition off before attempting cold starting does not count.
I think Duane will concur.

Thanks for a full explanation. With a "new" bike, one often doesn't know what reasonalble expectations are. Those bikes should start on one kick. The /2 BMW was famous for being the easiest bike to start of them all.
gspd's post came just as mine came out. I agree, that method of kicking would assure me as the mechanic of job security.

Even though I would kick a few times in a row, I always made sure my application was smooth and not jarring. I have a high degree of mechanical empathy. Helps keep me keep clear of predatory hellish mechanics!
