well, I did some more testing last night with my other battery. And there were some strange noises coming from the unit. It would spin, but most noticeably, not spin down or idle down smoothly.
Opening the unit up, I found the planetary gear cover had fallen out of it's recess and was shorting out the armature. (Known problem so not a real surprise).
It appears that Euromotoelectrics has a replacement armature with the cover or shield built onto it, greatly improving on the original design.
the rest of the starter is like new, has low miles and I was surprised to even see that the field magnets are clamped in place, not glued.

My Toyota Camry has 320 k miles and the starter is original. I have never experienced this in my life.
Ask the Indians what happens when you don't control immigration.

MS, hadn't heard that, so it is a good thing that I gave the car away before the starter failed on me.

has anyone on the board rebuilt one of these Valeo's with parts from Euromotoelectrics?
I ordered a new planetary gear cover plate which is too big (by .080") to fit into the gear recess. Euromotoelectrics says it's the right one and will fit. (Trust me, it won't) unless I buy a super nice hydraulic press and hope that the nylon material that holds it doesn't crack.
So I ended up using the previous cover, after re-forming the tangs and then applying some JB Weld (for plastic).
Any thoughts?
