Which switch is used depends on which shift cam is in the trans. Earlier bikes had a bump on the cam and later bikes were a depression. So the switches work in a reverse manner from each other. Only reason I can see you have this idiosyncrasy. But it's not really a problem if it doesn't leak.
I should have the later cam to suit the later oil switch in my 9/'81 RS. It's a mystery to me how that earlier cam got in there.........
I also thought that I should have had the upgraded shift mechanism too, but I seem to recall that 9/'81 may have just missed out. Regardless, I don't think any 81's had the early switch cam?

My 81 didnt come with the shift kit either. But has it now.
