Put the spring in a vice.
Bend the spring to open the coils.
Place washers in the space.
Bend in alternate directions for even spread.
Do enough spaces to extend the spring length to where you want it.
Install.
Remove washers with pliers.

Yeah, here in the States we use pennies. Washers are too expensive!

I have a spring puller, too. It works pretty well.

Got a couple minutes with the bike today and indeed the right slider pinch bolt is stripped. Set my wee little torque wrench to 60 in-lbs and it just kept turning. I've got to take it apart and either replace it or figure out some way to Timesert it or possibly set it up with a stepped stud (inserted from above) and nut. A possible upside is that there MAY be a dual disc front end near me for a reasonable price. The downside is that then I've got to polish and rebuild another caliper and find a machinist to drill and tap another outlet on my MC. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy.

SteveD: thanks for the washers in the coils reminder. I'll try that in a bit, after I raid the boys' piggybanks for a buncha pennies.

Got the )(*$&%@)# springs on the stands, not as tough as it coulda been, as I used the (thanks Steve & Rob) 'penny' method.

First, bent the spring and shoved pennies I borrowed from the younger boy's piggy bank in the open coils:



Then the spring goes on the bike:



Then I ran the stand through one stowed/deployed cycle:



Then the younger boy picked up the pennies.

Oil's in. Three quarts in that pan puts the level halfway between the 'full' and 'add' marks on the dipstick.

And I gave the PR spring a good poke and everything seems fine.

Anti-progress today. Had to remove the right fork slider to see about a thread repair in case a dual-disc front end doesn't materialize:

Progress that I did make was invisible today--I removed the rear wheel and cleaned up the left side clamp bore on the swingarm so the axle installs and removes smoothly and lubed the splines with that fabulous Honda Moly 60. Loving that moly smell!

Dang! First action in more than a month. It was a great day in Stonerville, the sun was out, it was in the 60s, and I had enough stuff to make the motorbike a roller again:



Fork is back together, now with a nut on the right pinch bolt. I also got the rear brake pedal on and hooked up. I had my 9 year old give me a good hearty push so I could test the brake:
