Tim, that has been suggested over on ADV. It's a possible solution but I'd prefer something more positive. I have no idea how long the nut has been loose - no symptoms presented themselves - I just happened to touch the nut and noticed it. Weird.

Ha, yes, I thought at the time of posting that pic that the 1000 litre water tub in the background may be a bit confusing. Only Jeff would carry something that big.

Not that it's any consolation, but I have pulled three output flanges recently, and two out of three were around 20 ft lbs, at most. The flanges hadn't spun on either shaft, and they both did the usual >bang< when they let loose... Maybe someone was having a bad Monday morning at the factory...?

Gday from an overcast west coast of tasmania.
Uneventful crossing on the ferry. The bastards wake you at 5:30 to shoo you off in the dark.
Of course my battery died and had to get a push start on the boat ramp. Couldnt get your magic jump starter to work Charlie. Is there a trick to it?
200km or so of very twisty roads to get to Strahan. Greasy wet n drizzle, not sure the tarmacadam ever dries out round here.
Good for moss and ferns and spectacular scenery when the fog clears.
btw also once found that final drive spline nut to be loose, maybe thats why they make you tighten em up with all god's strength?

Glad you made it, Mal. Bugger about the battery and the starter pack failing. Dunno what's going on there.
Weather is still blissfully sunny here, but you probably don't need to know that. Take care.

I've had similar experiences when pulling output flanges recently, with nuts being almost loose.
Damn German junk, only good for forty years, it seems.

Jeff (ME109) to the rescue. This Special Tool was made from an old drive shaft and a length of 40x8mm bar.
Torqued the FD pinion nut to 115 foot.pounds and all is well. I've just been for a good ride with Mal's loaner gearbox working beautifully. So nice to be back on the road. I also fitted a set of Oxford Hot Grips, with 5 heat settings. Looking forward to some good Autumn and Winter riding.

Grant and me had a wee shakedown ride yesterday, meeting for a beer at Noojee. 160 km round trip for me thru semi rural and rural roads with enough twisty bits to keep the grin wide. A very pleasant ride. We swapped bikes for a few kms! Other than the brakes and the gearchange I didn't notice much difference b/w the 78 and 82 models.

Glad to hear you got the bike running Charlie! And good to see a pair of RS's. I am fairing dreaming today, its cold with roving showers. Chilly morning in the high country was too much for the battery, clutch starting on wet roads wasnt easy either. New battery on the shelf in Hobart has finally fixed it for another 5 years I hope.
Still having fun. Roads and scenery as spectacular as they say. Great meal last night and whiskey tasting. Funny thing about that is they dont let you taste the local drop as Tassie whiskey starts at about $250 a bottle. Yikes!
