Unless you have an "EZ" clutch cable arrangement, 3 or 4mm is OK for the free-play at the hand-lever. Especially with a new clutch and cable. Just keep an eye on it...will stretch some in the first 20 or so operations.

Well, I went for a ride today. I had an appointment with the local dealer who has a airhead mechanic.
I wasn't having much luck tuning the carburetors, so I thought I would just take it to the man.

When I went to pay, the manager told me they didn't have much luck, and there must be a problem deeper within the carbs.

All I know for sure, is, for $42.50, my bike runs much worse than it did when I took it in.
I was even planning on going directly from the dealer to work, and to ride home in the wee hours of the chilly morning, but I was worried enough about getting home in the middle of the afternoon! I didn't want to push my luck and try it at 2am.

At least they didn't charge me for a complete hour's labor.

So I get to rebuild the carbs this winter. I guess I should set up the kitchen table, finally.

I wouldn't leap right in to a rebuild. First thing to check when the carbs won't tune right is a vacuum leak.

I keep meaning to spray carb cleaner at the head connections.

Start a new thread for gosh sakes. To dive into a rebuild from what you have presented is not the way. First diagnose it.

I was just bringing folks (Jean) up-to-date. I'm not asking for help.

edit: and besides, they have never been "gone through" since they were new (1978), so it probably wouldn't hurt.
