+1 what Steved said.
FWIW - my pistons were OK, but there was sludge in the caliper.
Use only brake fluid to clean inside (some alcohol is alright but no mineral spirits, gas, etc.).
I reinstalled my trans last week then stopped to replace the rear brake hose. I noticed the piston seal had herniated a tad so I opened it all up.
All soft and gooey and it wiped away easily. The piston was also ok. The seal was kaput however.

A clean and a couple of coats of caliper paint and they'll harden for a week or so until I fiddle further.
What's so different about caliper paint from other auto paint except maybe heat properties?

Now I'm wondering whether to apply rule number 5?. 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
There are no leeks or weeps.
I just hear Vanzen's advice regarding my brakes. Make my brakes all that they can be.
That's always been my a basic rule for me if it's not broke leave it alone, however with hydraulic brakes it pays to flush bleed the brake fluid periodically, for me it's every 2 years and there is a good reason for this, brake fluid absorbs water and it's the water that will damage the master cylinder and the pistons in the calipers.
Warning on brake fluid do NOT use DOT 5 fluid on your bike unless it specifies it as it will be incompatible with the seals, stick with what the manufacturer specifies and in most cases it will be DOT 4.
