From the investigating that I have done, this is what I have been told. They make one size solo seat for a /5 swb They make one size solo seat to fit a /5 lwb and a /6 and one size to fit a /7. Some call them solo,s and others call them authorities. I believe the info I received was for the Denfields, though I am sure there are other manufacturers. I was told that the /7 seat would mount on a /5 lwb or/6 but the gap between the tank and the end of the seat would be fairly large. I have been wanting to get one for my 60, but just haven't been able to pull the trigger.

Just in case this approach works for somebody ...

I fitted a Denfield - Slash 7 type - to my 90/6, as a lift off seat - without the 30mm gap. It came with odd fixing brackets - it had been fitted to some unknown non-BMW bike. Since I was sewing a new cover for it I was able to lift the foam a bit to fit some bolts with locknuts to the pan. A 12mm bolt locates into the RH hole in the frame and a 8mm bolt with a notch ground into it fits into the latch on the left. I also fitted an aluminium bracket near the front that kind of wedges it against the frame to stop it wiggling. It locates nicely with a satisfying click.

It is much more comfortable than the original dual seat and gives me a lot more packing room at the rear. I fitted a 'coffee table' there, and some PVC tubes for tyre irons, pump, telescopic fishing rod etc. I am more concerned with practicality than authenticity.

ps: sewing a new cover for a seat is surprisingly straightforward ...

I had a solo seat for my SWB /5 and rode with it on my /6 for several years. They're really nice but leg stretching room is limited and the older ones tend to have somewhat softer foam.

The best thing about them is that they free up a lot of space that you can use to pack junk across the bags and rear fender!

Heres a shot of my bike taken in NY state at the Delaware Water Gap on my way to Canada, back in 1988:

You know, you can buy new reproduction solo seats in the pleated and early non-pleated stock versions for under $200, right?

I haven't been able to find one for a /5 except at Meyers. I have sent them a couple emails without a response so I have given up on them. The only other solo I have seen for sale is for the /7.

There's a /5 in my shop with a solo seat...I will get some pictures later today, but it has a custom mount that would probably work on any twin shock airhead...SWB or LWB.

I tried emailing Meyers from a different email address this morning. Asked if I could purchase the seat. We'll see if that gets a response :?

I didn't realize you could just buy the seat from BMW. A little more expensive but hopefully you get what you pay for.

The seats from BMW run roughly twice as much as the aftermarket ones. Here's another company that sells them: http://www.bmwbayer.de/Single-seat-for- ... model.html
