Derek,

Modern tyres need higher pressures, use 36 front and 40 rear and see how you get on

Chas,read the Haynes manual and they recommend 26 & 28 psi,wouldn't 40 be a bit too much ?

It may not happen in every market due to legal concerns but in the UK most tire manufacturers recommend pressures for specific models. If not quite 40 PSI they are always higher than BMW's original 26 and 28. For airheads, Metzler I think give 31 front and 35 rear. Other manufactures figures vary and are generally higher still.

Forget Haynes for this and a few other things.
Haynes has probably not updated their manual since airheads were still being produced.

I think I ran my Bridgestone Spitfires at 35/36.

What a difference putting air in the tyres made,30 front and 35 rear, handled sweetly right up until a twat nearly took me out on a roundabout(she was in the wrong lane and turned into my lane) then a speeder nearly ran into my rear when I changed lanes on the bypass,my son,who was following me,said the driver flew past him at high speed, what is it with cage drivers?
Still had a blast on the bike though!

Take care! And don't forget your safety gear (for your body).
I also like Hyper Lites on the rear and DUAL Fiamm horns for the twats that try to come into your lane. She will think there is a lorry next to her when you sound those things off!
