I have never heard of anyone running a single row chain on the earlier camgear, what about the chain tensioner will that work ?

The consequences are fairly dire if it did go wrong.

If I had a 600, experiments I would undertake would be to use a 308 cam and see if that helps with the pinging issues.

Single row chain on the /5 camgear has been done before, it's nothing exotic. For the pinging I wanted to go all "stock solution": I'll first go with a 1979 advance unit which slows advance down and if that doesn't help I have an electronic ignition to take care of it. I want the full compression so the low compression gasket is the last resort.

1972 camshaft flange for countersunk mounting screws

Well, I can't say I didn't try. Using the post-9/75 flange with reduced height of the bolt heads on the /5 camgear did in fact work, but the PO left me with a damaged thread one on of the flange mounting points so the camshaft has to come out again to repair it. At the same time I might as well remove the camshaft gear and get the right camshaft flange in, the one that utilizes the countersunk M8x20 screws. Here's the problem: they appear to be NLA. Does anybody have one in the stash of parts? I asked Hans @ Hucky but maybe somebody here has one that he would let go.

Before I forget: the camshaft can be remove with just the crankshaft installed, right? The block is otherwise completely empty. Just remove the oil pump wedge, loosen the flange bolts and the camshaft can be pulled from the front.

Thanks in advance.

Stephen

MotorennIsrael sell some bronze bushed camshaft flanges, this is the part that bolts onto the crankcase within which the camshaft rotates?

I should have an original from my 06/75 90/6 if you want it. I don't thank that it is too worn, I just replaced it when I changes my camshaft this winter.
