can it be done without modding anything like lengthening bolts?.. or would that be just a waste of time?...

There's not enough threads on any of the top nuts for that to be a safe option, or we'd all be doing it...

I recall, from a while ago, someone had explained about welding two top plates together and running that set up.
I did actually purchase a second stock /5 plate, myself....Also, it sits with the "spares".

Would that work on a /7 bike? If so, would it be an improvement to the front forks' operation? I've never understood why a machined piece of aluminum was a better solution to a not-much-thinner steel stamping.

The superiority of an aluminum triple clamp is two-fold (at least):

1. A triple clamp assembly is a more effective way to hold the top of the tubes because you are clamping the surface of the tube rather than just drawing the top of the tube against a flat surface and relying on how tight you are pulling it against that surface.

Aluminum is stiffer than steel, per weight, so you can create a much stiffer aluminum triple clamp than a steel one for the same weight, or a much lighter one of the same strength. Also, the way the triple clamp maintains its stiffness has to do with its thickness and the amount of surface touching the tube.

The short version is: a thick material results in a much stronger connection in this application, so the much lighter material can yield a stronger connection for the same or less weight.

Good simple explanation there Major, it makes sense!....though I'm alittle hesitant bout fitting a Bulky Billet Alloy Brace
mainly for wanting to keep a more Original look of my /5 around that area, and without having to trim headlight ears,
some even say they don't notice any difference with the Billet alloy unless you were racing it, I'm also hearing that fitting another lower Fork brace/Clamp would do a lot more towards stiffening and improving tracking of the front?...I wouldn't know myself.
