Reading further, it seems that Redline gear oils come in a variety of hues, including red, and the colorants may change with use.

Update:

After a good cleaning, the pitting was so bad the bowls developed smallest of holes.

So new bowls it is...

The saga continues. I posted a new topic wondering what I need to do further to get this thing started.

Hopefully someone has some answers...

I think I prefer the flood theory. Otherwise, your carb pics will probably start showing up in the "ethanol-is-the-font-of-all-evil" conspiracy theorists' hall-o'-shame.

I haven't seen red hypoid myself---even "Redline" synthetic 75W-90 is reported to be yellow.

I hope you get it resuscitated by the 4th.

Yeah I looked around Brooklyn for used Rob. Guy said he had them, and when I showed up what he had were new. So bit the bullet on it.
