MS is right, I know little about the BMW after I was no longer selling them, of which the last year was 1981.

I was selling them new in the /2, /5, /6 and /7 era. A steering damper was not in any way a sales gimmick. I can't recall anybody asking about a damper before the sale, only at the time of delivery.

Damping was not needed. A properly set up bike was stable. Don't forget, the BMW was designed in Europe, where nobody would load them up like Americans did. All BMWs in Europe were delivered with low bars. Does that tell you something? They made fun of our "cowboy" bars. The idea of set-backs was considered crazy.

In our factory service schools, it was admitted that the damper was for liability.

How long can be go on about this thread? I guess that over time, we easily forget stuff. I know that I do.

Looks like it may have been time wasted, but I thought they were important and also hated the cheap plastic knob so I made this http://m.imgur.com/KQqJaNB

Texer, it is beautiful. You did a good job, but it isn't finished yet. Now glue a BMW emblem in the middle:-)

Very nice knob, Texer. It would be good to see pics of the whole bike. Perhaps there are some in the Pictures of your Bike thread(?)

Thanks - It was a surprise (Ebay auction back in 2010; my first airhead and me a new rider), I thought it was white in the pictures. I remember really liking it at first peek when it arrived by truck. Minutes later the spike key was in and wire insulation smoke was coming out of the headlight bucket. And so it began. I began learning airhead refurbishing from the world at large and the knowledgeable sharing their skills here and it is fairly sorted out finally.

How did you add the picture?

Ah, these old dears have ways of getting their humans to learn everything required for their comfort. Like cats.

To post that picture from your IMGUR account I right clicked on the image, selected 'Save image address' and pasted that into my reply adding at the back end, with no spaces. Oops, I can't write that without the software thinking it's an image address and stuffing everything up. Just read what I wrote while mentally removing each instance of '%20'. Does that make sense?

Thanks - trying that here: Image

If that worked, I have a silly question; are these mufflers stock Bmw? I have seen the similar shape, but the others have Bmw markings at the rear openings and also weld lines in the constitution.
