Thank you for the Carly interlude. Now, back to our MC business. Rained yesterday. But it dried up today! Got out and about on the moto!
It fired right up, and I discovered it needs less than 30 sec of choke in this weather--it actually stalled out three doors down. Once I figured that out it ran great. Here's the return from the test run (clicky on the picky):
After that, the boys and Mrs. melville all got a spin around the neighborhood. Good times.
Felt good to put my own discoloration on the headers:
After that, I took the passenger pegs off, as I am not qualified to take a pillion any distance. Mrs. melville took the boys out for the afternoon and said "Put your gear on and RIDE, you doofus." She also told me to be ready to dig a hole when she got back mit the boys, as they were tree shopping.
So I got my ATGATT on as they left and had a wee ride. Went to the gas station and filled it up--nice to buy 200 miles of gas for less than $20! Then off to the Bottoms and all the way out Mad River Road:
I was riding to break in the rings--on and off the throttle in 2nd and 3rd gear, going from 2K to 4K or 5K rpm and back down. Had a few moments of "What's that smell?" but nearly no "What's that noise?" Bounced around the Bottoms (our road department hates us) a bit more, then hustled home and got into my digging gear.
Bike need a spot of tuning--idle is about 1500 per the MotoMeter, and the synch is definitely off a bit. NO FLUIDS ARE LEAKING! This is definitely the fastest thing I've ever owned. I'm both looking forward to and fearing a bit trying out 4th and 5th gears.

Disappointed Melville. I had hoped you'd wear the matching pink shoes for the inaugural run!

Board is back! Board is back! Catching up with the last week:
Yeah, found the source of the "What's that noise?"
I put a plain nut on it, but the stud is spinning. I have the Genuine BMW Part coming at the BMW car dealer, and I'll deal mit the stud at that time. Maybe a thread repair, maybe JB Weld. Had fun calling the car dealer (I'm 200+ miles from the nearest BMW moto dealer) with a part number and nothing else. When he described it as "Cap nut, $3.80 ea." I figured he was close enough and I let him know it was a MC part. He was a bit surprised and pleased to learn this.
I checked the valve clearances and found that they'd moved a bit in all directions (no more than .004"), checked the oil level (OK), and took a closer stab at baseline (non-running) carb synch.
Looking forward to Moto Commute Friday!
